Formally named the Blue Whale of Catoosa, this roadside attraction has become one of the most recognizable locations for Route 66 in the state of Oklahoma.
The whale was built by Hugh Davis in the early 1970's as an anniversary present to his wife Zelda. Zelda loved to collect whales and Hugh must have wanted to go all in for this anniversary. The pond was spring fed and was originally intended for use by the family. But gradually so many friends and neighbors wanted to enjoy the area that Hugh brought in sand for a beach and picnic tables. The attraction eventually added an A.R.K. (Animal and Reptile Kingdom) and also featured Hugh's brother-in-law Indian Chief Wolf-Robe Hunt.
Unfortunately, by the late 80's the Davises were no longer able to manage the park and closed it to the public.
As is common in these situations, the park fell into disrepair after the couple passed away. Fortunately, the community rallied together to restore much of the park in the late 2000's. However, the A.R.K. was a lost cause.
The photo is a composite of eight separate photographs stitched together in Photoshop. My vision for this project was to portray this Big Blue Whale in miniature, like you could place it in a jar and have it up on your mantle.
